The Open Plan Office: Pros, Cons and Solutions

4nd3r50n1nt3r10r5

According to Wikipedia, “‘Open Plan’ is the generic term used in architectural and interior design for any floor plan which makes use of large, open spaces and minimizes the use of small, enclosed rooms such as private offices.” These designs have been all the rage in the office furniture industry in the last twenty years and this trend shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. Many businesses here in Pittsburgh and across the country are renovating former warehouses into fabulous and functional workspaces. As with most things, the good usually comes with a little bad. Because of this, we tend to see and even encourage a hybrid of the open plan where most personnel are in some sort of benching units and the managerial staff maintain private offices surrounded by four walls.

West Elm Workspace Pittsburgh Opens

Thursday, September 15th was a big night for the staff here at Anderson Interiors.  We officially opened West Elm Workspace Pittsburgh on Penn Avenue, Downtown.  The vision was two years in the making and included over a year of planning, months of searching for the best location, and even more months of renovations.  Anderson Interiors is thrilled to be chosen by West Elm Workspace and Inscape to bring this innovative line to the Pittsburgh area.

The showroom features many of the most popular West Elm Workspace pieces and a great deal of accessories from Williams-Sonoma’s West Elm line.  We were also encouraged to bring in local artisans to display pieces that embody the culture and flavor of Pittsburgh.

John Malecki, owner of JM Custom Builds, meticulously crafted the beautiful Walnut Slab Industrial Bar Table and the Reclaimed Industrial Barn Door.  John worked with Anderson’s Team Leader, John Heller, and our In-House Designer, Emilie Criner, to create pieces that would coordinate well with the West Elm Workspace line.  Notice the live wood edge on the bar similar to our conference room table and the base of the bar inspired by Pittsburgh’s many bridges.

For artwork, we chose Chuck Beard of Beard Foto, a local photographer revered for his Abandoned Pittsburgh photo series and books.  Chuck printed his photos for us on metal and cedar wood.  The way the light plays off the metal is nothing short of spectacular.  The metal and wood prints highlight the industrial feel of some of the furniture line and fit nicely with the architectural features of the showroom space.  Chuck is also the Art Director for Pittsburgh Magazine.

The opening of West Elm Workspace was featured online on both Trib Live and Pittsburgh Magazine.  See the full articles here…
